This is a follow-up to PressInfo 148. We continue the peace-making analysis with these dimensions: The peace process Negotiation as the only method There has been an emphasis on “getting them to the table”, on negotiations and compromise. When not knowing what to do, call a conference! What if the emphasis had been on dialogues with each party first, based on active listening to their stories, fears and hopes? In other words, deep understanding first, and the development of a minimum of trust and mutual respect. After that there would be talks/conversations and more confidence. And finally, some kinds of negotiations shaped around the core issues as defined by the parties rather than a negotiation agenda set up by external governments that seek simultaneously to promote their own interests in the region? What if the principle of compromise had been scrapped and we had recognised that no side should be...

For the project INSTEAD OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS By the Swedish Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (SLMK) in cooperation with International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) Ten years after the so-called end of the Cold War, nuclear weapons are still with us. There is the BMD, the risk of diversion of fissile materials, the fear of nuclearisation of terrorism. The weapons and their means of delivery have become ever more sophisticated. Through base systems, sub-marines, aircraft carriers, the global reach of militarism has intensified. Still, in proportion to the increasing threat all this represents to humankind’s survival as well as to democracy and global development, public debate with visions of a nuclear-free is desperately feeble. Advocates of a nuclear-free world, face immensely powerful governments and military-industrial-scientific structures. We also face the arrogance of power of the roughly 600 individuals (presidents, prime ministers, defence ministers, chiefs of...

At 86, Robert S. McNamara has written yet another book filled with wisdom and vision, Wilson’s Ghost, co-authored by James G. Blight. It is subtitled Reducing the risk of conflict, killing, and catastrophe in the 21st century. It’s a unique and moving reading experience. McNamara has almost forty years in public service; he served as Secretary of Defence to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson from 1961 to 1968. Robert S. McNamara & James G. Blight Through this work he offers personal lessons learned from both the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis while he uses the framework of President Woodrow Wilson’s ideas to produce what I judge to be the most compelling realistic blueprint for a new American foreign and security policy. The personalities in the Bush administration would be wise to study McNamara’s morally and intellectually powerful and consistent exposé. I fear they won’t. Wilson’s Ghost is a book way beyond their frame...

(Robert S McNamara & James G Blight: Wilson’s Ghost, Reducing the Risk of Conflict, Killing and Catastrophe in the 21st Century, BBS Public Affairs, New York, 2001, 270 pp, 24 USD). Personerne i...

President Bush’s State of the Union address was great rhetorically, he was self-confident and visionary. He comforted, I assume, the souls of Americans. Members of Congress rose to their feet and applauded him repeatedly and enthusiastically. I’ve taken the trouble to listen to the speech, read it carefully and analyse it. Why do I, deep down, perceive this speech as bellicose, disrespectful of others and as boding ill for the world? I believe we all have a duty now to try to dialogue with Americans about the fact that some of us who are by no means “anti-American” feel increasingly alienated by what we hear and see. I, for one, was brought up with great admiration for the United States; my parent’s generation always pointed to how Americans helped Europe, to the Marshall Plan and the dynamism of American society, its art, literature and music, and the miracles of its...

Introduction This PressInfo is written by concerned American citizens. They express their thoughts upon reading PressInfo # 143, Bush’s “State of War Address”. Among them are activists, leadership experts, consultants, business people, professors, a priest, editors, while others who wrote are simply concerned citizens. They are about an equal number of men and women. Below you can read what they think and feel. All are critical of Bush’s policies. Did we select only Bush-critical messages? No. However, only one (1) among some forty responses was critical to the analysis in PressInfo # 143: a US government envoy to a conflict region wrote back without offering his name, “I would prefer that I do not receive crap news like this one.” These are the main themes: – Bush does not speak for me. I disagree with U.S. foreign policy. – I am ashamed that he is our President. I do not...

In the Fall Issue of Development Outreach, World Bank president James D. Wolfensohn reflects on the consequences of September 11 and says that we must fight terrorism and poverty, with “and” in italics. It is one of these élitist articles that states what an unidentified global “we” must now do to make the world a better place. While I do not doubt his wish to see a better world, the lack of both causal analysis and strategy for change in this article raises concerns. There are already thousands of such statements and many more will be made when the World Economic Forum is held in New York from January 31. Wolfensohn’s exposé, in spite of all the seemingly idealistic words, makes it abundantly clear that we live in a time in which political power is inversely related to intellectual power and truth power. He starts out asserting that “we know...
