PressInfo #138 – TFF:s medstiftare doktor påavhandling om ungamed ursprung i andra kulturer

Glädjande nyheter från vår egen värld. Fredag den 26 oktober 2001 försvarade TFF:s medstiftare, Christina Spännar, sin doktorsavhandling på Sociologiska Institutionen vid Lunds Universitet. Titeln är Med främmande bagage. Tankar och erfarenheter hos unga människor med ursprung i annan kultur eller Det postmoderna främlingskapet.

“Christina har genomfört sin forskning samtidigt som hon tar hand om många vardagsuppgifter vid stiftelsen, inte minst när jag är borta,” säger Jan Öberg. “Hon deltar i alla beslut om TFF:s verksamhet och politik och utför massor av redaktionellt arbete på våra publikationer och hemsidesartiklar. Det går inte ut någon PressInfo utan hon har kommenterat och förbättrat utkasten.”

“Hon läser och kommenterar i praktiken alla mina texter och jag är glad över att ha kunnat betala tillbaka lite genom att under tiden ha givit synpunkter på de olika delarna i slutfasen av avhandlingen,” säger Jan Öberg. “Christina är TFF-ankare och inspiratör – i mycket större omfattning än man får intrycket av när man tittar in på vår hemsida eller bläddrar i vår publikationslista. Det finns all anledning att fira hennes disputation!”

Lite om avhandlingen

Avhandlingen analyserar hur ungdomar och unga vuxna sammanfogar sina olika “livsvärldar” när de växer upp med mer än en kultur. Mycket enkelt uttryckt handlar det om individer som möter, och lär sig leva med, sådant som är främmande och ibland till en början även hotfullt.

Avhandlingen behandlar en rad processer, som de unga genomgår, och mekanismer som de unga använder när de hamnar i en svårbegriplig värld till följd av att de är flyktingar, invandrare eller barn av blandäktenskap. De tvingas arbeta med normer, värderingar och traditioner från mer än en kultur och jämka ihop dem till en sammanhängande och meningsfull tolkning av verkligheten.

Relevant för freds- och försoningsstudier

Det är en avhandling i sociologi men inte utan relevans för freds- och försoningsstudier. Så här säger Christina “Jag har inte använt fredsforskningens teoriapparat men hela frågan om hur man kan leva med främmande bagage är så mycket mer central i debatten och i vår värld nu jämfört med när jag började fundera över dessa frågor.

– Vad jag har lärt av dessa unga människor är bland annat att de har en speciell förmåga att medla och betrakta problem och konflikter ifrån mer än en synvinkel. Jag tror det hänger ihop med att de själva har byggt sina liv och åsikter på mer än en kultur, de kan se att olika sätt att leva och tänka på kan vara helt ok. Det är helt enkelt så att de tycks ha svårt att se att det bara finns en enda sanning.

– De har därtill ofta utvecklats till goda brobyggare mellan det nya landets människor och myndigheter och föräldragenerationen. Det har att göra med att de unga generellt lär sig det nya språket mycket snabbare och därmed har lättare att förstå och ta till sig det nya samhällets tänkesätt.

Jag tror att de unga som kommer till tals i den här avhandlingen kan hjälpa majoritetskulturens människor att se hur deras samhälle ser ut och känns med andra – andras – ögon än våra egna. Jag tror kort och gott att vi alla bör kunna öka vår förståelse för de här processerna och efterhand inse att de människor som kommer hit med främmande bagage, i huvudsak är en tillgång, en rikedom och inte först och främst ett ‘problem.’ När vi kommer så långt kommer det att finnas mindre etniska och nationalistiska spänningar och mer tolerans runt om i världen. Kort sagt, mindre våld och krig,” säger Christina Spännar.

“Och nu ser jag verkligen fram emot att fortsätta min forskning på det här området och tillika få tid att engagera mig mer i TFF:s arbete och projekt. Jag känner att de två kan gå upp i en högre enhet.”
