TFF invited to highest-level peace conference in Beijing

June 25, 2024

Much to our surprise – and a great honour – TFF, through Jan Oberg, has been invited to attend and speak at the conference commemorating the 70th anniversary of the initiation of the famous Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

The Five Principles, as stated in the Sino–Indian Agreement 1954, are:

• mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,

• mutual non-aggression,

• mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs,

• equality and co-operation for mutual benefit, and

• peaceful co-existence

Read more about it here. These principles, also called Panchsheel, are fundamental to Chinese foreign policy and embedded in the preamble of the country’s constitution.

Here is an excerpt of the invitation letter:

“The commemorative events, to be held under the theme “From the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence to Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind” will begin with a commemorative conference, followed by a luncheon and sub-forums. His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, will attend and deliver an important speech at the commemorative conference, and his Excellency Li Qiang, premier of the State Council, will moderate the conference. His Excellency Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, will attend and address the luncheon.

Former state leaders, experts and scholars, friendly personages and representatives of the media and business communities from various countries are invited to attend the commemorative conference and speak at the luncheon or sub-forums.”

The commemorative conference is held at The Great Hall of the People, and the afternoon discussions occur at the Diaoyutau State Guesthouse.

The event is organised by CIIS – China Institute of International Studies.

Many congratulation! Your participation in that important conference is a great opportunity for all those who attend it to hear your eloquent and sincere message of universal peace. At a time when two devastating wars are raging in the heart of Europe and the Middle East, either of which could turn into a global conflict with unimaginable consequences, the world needs to step back from wars and aggression and listen to calmer and more constructive and peaceful voices.

The ancient concept of Ahimsa was central to Mahatma Gandhi’s message of peace and reconciliation and was also the first of the five precepts of Buddhism which has had a very important impact on Chinese philosophy and history. That concept was also echoed by ancient Iranian prophet Zoroaster whose most important message was “Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds”.

Sadly, at the moment, the Western world seems to have become addicted to militarism and unending wars, represented by NATO, the world’s most powerful and expanding military alliance. Maybe this is a phase that all declining empires go through, except that in a nuclear age if military adventures are not checked and controlled, they could lead to global annihilation. We seem to have learned nothing from two devastating world wars and are repeating the same mistakes again.

It is time for the Global South to come to the rescue and save mankind from the scourge of a nuclear war. China, India and Africa alone account for more than half of the entire global population. If they combine forces, they can move mountains. The era of imperial supremacy is over and all of us live in a global village under a multipolar system. It is time we show some humility and listen to the voices calling for equality, cooperation, reconciliation and peace. I hope we can all get a copy of your speech.

This is wonderful, Jan! I am so happy for you and for them! The Five Principles are extremely admirable and it is interesting that they are fundamental to China’s foreign policy. That’s not what the USG and US media would want us to believe. I am so glad that you will be there! My, gosh! The architecture and interior design are extraordinarily beautiful! I wish it looked like that around here, or even a little more beautiful would be a start. Many congratulations and I hope you have a very good and happy and safe time there and back.
