July, 2004 Violence has become an every day component of life, whether we are subjected to it directly or observe it from a distance. If we are to have any chance of replacing violence with a ‘culture of peace’, it is essential to find ways of extending our sense of belonging, beyond family, race and nation to include our identification as a member of the one humanity. How can we say that there is peace in the world whilst 80% of the human race is living in poverty, whilst we are polluting the planet beyond its capacity to regenerate and whilst we continue to spend disproportionate sums of money on weapons that bring pain and even total annihilation? If humankind is brought to the point where a large enough number of persons are able to sense and acknowledge an overriding identity with humanity, however, we will no longer be prepared...

Ville man, i bägge fallen, förekomma USA?

LONDON – Whilst the United States has been moving to the right South America has moved to the left. The presidents of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela and Ecuador all came to power partly by challenging Washington’s economic prescriptions. But this, even middle of the road bankers believe, is working out for the best. It is important to report that this latest turn in Latin America’s chequered political history does not presage a return to the caudillo- the often flamboyant, dictatorial, populist. With the exception of Venezuela most of this anti-Americanism has two ingredients. First it is profoundly democratic. Second it is pro market reforms, even as it rejects publicly the so-called “Washington Consensus”. No longer is it true, as political scientist Glen Dealy wrote over a decade ago, that “In Latin American minds the vision of freely competing factions seems a choice between chaos and privilege. Latin Americans maintain that...

Elections amidst ongoing violence The Iraqi election is scheduled for 30th January. The vote will be for a 275-member transitional National Assembly. This will choose a president and two deputy-presidents from among their own members. This so-called presidential council will in turn appoint a prime minister who will hold the main power, and other ministers. The National Assembly will then draft a constitution to be voted on in a referendum by 15 October 2005, and if approved it will be followed by another election for a permanent government in December 2005. So, the 30th January election is only the first stage in a long process. While President George Bush, Prime Minister Tony Blair, Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, the Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, and many others have insisted that the election will be held as scheduled, many others including the Iraqi insurgents have vowed to disrupt the election. Meanwhile, the...

Satha-Anand answers questions from a studentabout it with reference to the situation in Thailand Q – Why do you think the non-violent action training should be introduced to the National Security Council policy? A – Let me respond to your questions in two ways: theoretical and practical. At the theoretical level, for the past two decades I have argued that if conflict is paired between the state and the peoples, it has been on the side of the state that initiates violence, not the peoples’ side. (See for example: Robin Williams, The Wars Within: Peoples and States in Conflict (Cornell University Press, 2003) As a result, to try to stop violence by “preaching nonviolence” only to the peoples will not put an end to what I called “situation of violence”. Understood in military term, between offensive and defensive violence, changing those who use defensive violence alone will not end violence. If offensive violence disappears,...

Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life. While poverty persists, there is no true freedom. Nelson Mandela Abstract The topic which I wish to address here is vast; all I can reasonably hope to do is paint a picture with very broad brushstrokes. The first section of this paper is an attempt to explain what Globalisation for the Common Good is. In the second part, I will endeavour to explain how and why I came to believe in the merits of Globalisation for the Common Good. In this part, I will shed light on my personal journey to Globalisation for the Common Good. It has been an intellectual, emotional and spiritual journey; it has involved wrestling with a diverse range of concepts, ideas concerning the relationship...

LONDON – Over the last six years the strengthening of international criminal law and the increase in the prosecution of crimes against humanity appear to have been swept along on a flood tide. Now in 2005 its waters appear to be surging even more strongly as ex-president Augusto Pinochet of Chile, the Congolese and Ugandan rebels and elements of the Sudanese government all look likely to be recommended for prosecution and trial. “An unprecedented movement has emerged to submit international politics to judicial procedures [and] has spread with extraordinary speed”, Henry Kissinger has observed in a tone both despairing and disparaging. The East Timorese Nobel prize winner José Ramos-Horta is rather more welcoming, saying, “In this day and age you cannot kill hundreds of people, destroy a whole country, and then just get fired.” In about two weeks’ time a UN commission of enquiry will report on alleged genocide in...
